The client, a retired banker turned sculptor, outgrew his garage studio, and required a specially designed space to pursue his new work. The challenge: create a sculpture studio strong enough to support 2,000 pound blocks of marble, yet preserve the look and texture of a hundred-year-old estate. The solution: a modern steel structure wrapped in traditional materials the stone, clapboard and slate roofing used in the main house. A roll-up glass door permits the sculptor to work outside on nice days, and clerestory windows fill the studio with light year-round.
