The challenge of this project was to provide for a growing family’s needs while respecting the character of their old barn and the surrounding countryside. The solution was to break the box with a two-story wall at 45 degrees. This provides a datum for the new construction while dividing the public and private areas of the house. In addition, the forms and materials such as barnboard siding, reclaimed pine flooring and metal roofing relate back to the area’s vernacular architecture as well as the original structure.
